MSC Cruises was a subsidiary of the Mediterranean Shipping Co. and was formed in 1987. It was originally established under the name Fiotta Lauro and is based in Naples Italy. The first vessel was the Achille Lauro which caught fire and sank in 1996.
Other vessels in the MSC fleet included the Melody in 1997 and the Rhapsody in 2001. Later additions included the MSC Lirica, MSC Opera, MSC Armonia, & MSC Sinfonia. A larger class of vessels was introduced beginning in 2006 including the MSC Musica, MSC Orchestra, MSC Poesia & the MSC Magnifica. MSC’s biggest builds to date are the recent MSC Fantasia, MSC Splendida and the MSC Divina. The Divina was originally called the Fantastica and it was christened by Sophia Loren
